Prevent serious hospitalizations by getting vaccinated

Are you 50 years old and older who have not been vaccinated against the varicella zoster virus (VZV)? Almost 95% of the country have been exposed to the virus in their lifetime and harbor a latent version of it.

This latent version emerges as shingles, a painful rash affecting parts of the body that sometimes develops into postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), the most common complication.

To protect yourself from developing these, make sure you are vaccinated.

Valley Discount Pharmacy offers the shingles vaccine to protect our seniors and let them enjoy their golden years to the fullest.

One vaccine is currently available in the U.S. to prevent shingles—Shingrix (RZV). Approved in 2017, it is more than 90% effective in preventing shingles.

So, What Does the Shingles Vaccine Do?

Shingles vaccine protects against shingles and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Two doses of Shingrix are more than 90% effective at preventing both these conditions and continue at 85% after at least 4 years.

Who Can Take the Shingles Vaccine?

There is no maximum age for getting Shingrix. Still, healthy adults 50 years and older get 2 doses of the shingles vaccine called Shingrix (recombinant zoster vaccine), separated by 2-6 months to prevent shingles and the complication from the disease.

Seniors should still get Shingrix even if they have had shingles, received Zostavax, or are unsure if they have had chickenpox.

Who Should Not Get Shingrix?

You should not get Shingrix if you:

  • have ever had a severe allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine or after a dose of Shingrix
  • tested negative for immunity to varicella zoster virus. If you test negative, you should get chickenpox vaccine.
  • currently have shingles
  • currently are pregnant or breastfeeding. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should wait to get Shingrix.
