Medications Seniors Should Use with Caution

medications-seniors-should-use-with-caution

The risk of negative drug reactions is increased in senior individuals because of the number of chronic conditions requiring a certain medication for each of them. Additionally, the elderly may be more sensitive to the side effects of some drugs.

To assist you in making more educated decisions regarding your medications and to reduce the likelihood of you experiencing adverse drug reactions or overdosing due to those medications, the American Geriatrics Society created the Beers list that advises seniors to exercise caution when using the medications listed below:

  • Non-Steroidal Inflammatory Drugs or NSAIDs

NSAIDs like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) can worsen preexisting conditions like stomach ulcers, hypertension, heart failure, and kidney damage.

  • Sleeping aids

Diphenhydramine-containing Tylenol PM and Unisom can cause confusion and falls. Sleeping pills are meant for short-term use (a couple of weeks at the most).

  • Antihistamines

(Benadryl) can cause confusion, blurred vision, constipation, dry mouth, and even urinary incontinence.

  • Anti-anxiety drugs such as Benzodiazepines

Ativan, Xanax (alprazolam), and Valium (diazepam) may increase falls and mental decline. They can lead to confusion and last longer than expected.
